Gentle Ocean Air: A Simple Foaming Hand Soap DIY

Gentle Ocean Air: A Simple Foaming Hand Soap DIY

One of my very first DIY recipe I ever posted on this blog was my easy foaming hand soap recipe. Over 3 years later, this is still a recipe I make for all the sinks in my home on a weekly basis. Over time I have come up with dozens of new scent combinations and have yet to find one that I don’t love. I have also upgraded my soap dispensing containers and am pretty much obsessed with the new ones as they hold more and fit in so well with my bathroom decor.

Well anyways, enough gushing about soap… how are you all! It has been a while since I have checked in from a personal stand point so I figured I would just hijack this post for a moment to let you inside my life a bit. With the Coronavirus pandemic raging, things have been completely upended in my life in many ways. Our dental office was forced to shut down for 2 months… I was an unemployed doctor which was a very interesting and humbling road to navigate. Now that we are reopen, we face a completely new set of challenges as we reopen our office with so many new protocols in place. Working a full day in a surgical gown, N-95 face mask and face shield in not for the faint of heart I must say! I know that each profession and industry and learning and growing through all of this, and we are all overcoming our own new set of obstacles, I just have to try and keep in mind that this is all for safety and we will all be better for all of these extra precautions!

On the home front, my girls have been troopers through this all. They certainly miss their friends and social interaction, and things have not been easy, but they really have rolled with all of the changes. They tell me daily that they can’t wait to go back to school though! I have to gently remind them that we really don’t know what the future will bring, and there is certainly a possibility that home school is in the cards for next year, but only time will tell. As for homeschooling the girls, its actually something I have always wanted to do, but in those visions I was also not holding down a career of my own! If this is what is deemed best, we will find a way to make it work, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want the girls to have a school experience next year. They are missing their friends and old routines so much that it really makes me sad to think there may be another year ahead of this!

And now, enough about me and all my random thoughts, let’s get to the soap! I have included a video this time around to give you all a visual of how easy it is to make your own foaming hand soap. I love this ocean fragrance for the bathrooms, but keep in mind that you can use any scent combination. You can also check out my original post for a few other scent combination ideas. Hope everyone is doing well with these crazy times, drop me a comment below and say hi!

Ocean Air Foaming Hand Soap Recipe

The basic foaming hand soap recipe is really quite easy, in fact it is so easy that it does not even require any measuring spoons or cups! Follow the steps below, but remember that there are several options for customization when you take into account the types of oils you use as well as the different fragrance combinations!

1. Fill a clean foaming hand soap dispenser 1/5 with liquid castile soap.

2. Next, add in a small squeeze of your chosen oil for enhanced moisturization. I typically use either grape seed oil or fractionated coconut oil. You can also use avocado or olive oil for heavy moisturization needs.

3. Now, add in a small squeeze of vegetable glycerin. This helps to thicken the soap and also adds in moisture.

4. Now its time to choose your fragrance. For this recipe (which is one of my all time favorites), I add in 1 cap full of Pacific Pearl fragrance from Brambleberry. If you are using essential oils or dropper fragrances, aim for about 10-20 drops of fragrance for a standard size hand soap bottle.

5. Now that you have added all the main ingredients, you will simply fill the remainder of your soap container with distilled water. Make sure it is distilled water and not tap water to avoid growth of bacteria in your soap! Leave a tiny bit of room at the top so that the air can incorporate into the mixture (allowing for the foaming consistency).

6. Gently mix together all ingredients and you’re all set!

Note: If your soap does not come out super fluffy and foamy, it is likely that your foaming hand soap dispenser is not working correctly. Unfortunately I have been through my fair share of duds with these dispensers. Change out your dispenser and you should notice a big improvement!
