Cookie Cutter Bath Bombs: A Shooting Star Tutorial

Cookie Cutter Bath Bombs: A Shooting Star Tutorial

So this one took me a little while to get the final outcome I was after. Luckily, I had a quarantine with some time on my hands and all the necessary ingredients! I have made lots of bath bombs but never actually ventured outside of the traditional ball shape. I have also had a secret ingredient I had been wanting to try for a long time now, and both of these desires ended up in my creation of the shooting star bath bomb!

While a little technique sensitive, this bath bomb produces some beautiful results. The secret ingredient? Good old fashioned Pop Rocks. Yes, you heard me right! I remember how my girls got some from Trick Or Treating last year, and as they were eating them I thought, how cool would those be to put in bath bombs!?? Fast forward over a year later and I am finally trying it out! The finished product are colorful little stars that pop, fizz, and swirl around the bath for a really fun experience.

As I alluded at the beginning, these are a bit touchy, try not to be frustrated if they crumble when removing them from the cookie cutters. Typically if this happens it’s due to not letting the material harden completely or not condensing well enough into the mold. If this happens, simply use the material for bath fizz salts and try again! Remember, this is all in fun!

1. Measure out baking soda, citric acid, arrowroot powder, and Epsom salt into your large mixing bowl. Using a fork, sift and stir all ingredients together in order to combine them well.

2. Next, add in the grapeseed/coconut oil, the polysorbate 80, and your essential oils. Using your fork, mash and stir all ingredients together until everything is well combined. You want to have a consistency at this point similar to wet sand. It should hold shape when you hold it in your hand and squeeze it together, but then crumble away easily. The mixture should not be too mushy or wet. If your mixture is too dry you can add in water via a spray bottle, 1 spray at a time. The water will activate the citric acid and start fizzing, so be sure to mix right away after each spray to stop the fizzing.

3. Once you have reached the desired consistency, dive the mixture evenly into 5 bowls.

4. Add your mica powder into each bowl, a different color for each bowl. Stir to combine the mica in each bowl and evenly distribute the color.

5. With your cookie cutters resting on a flat surface, begin to spoon material into the cookie cutters, one color at a time.

6. After rotating through all 5 of the colors, take a moment to pack in the material with the back end of your spoon or spoon handle, paying close attention to condensing the material inside the points of the stars.

7. Go back to adding material, one color at a time, and condensing as needed until you have filled the cookie cutter half way.

8. At the half way point, spoon about 1 tsp of Pop Rocks candy into the center of the cookie cutter, on top of the condensed material.

9. Now continue filling up the rest of the cookie cutter, one color at a time, and condensing every so often, paying attention to condense well into the points of the stars.

10. When the cookie cutter mold is completely filled and condensed flatten along the top with the back end of your spoon, and the bottom by rubbing it along the flat surface it is one. If you have excess material that has spilled out onto your flat surface, carefully drag your cookie cutter over top of this and it will further condense the material from the bottom up, filling any gaps within.

11. To finish sprinkle Pop Rocks candy on the top of your bath bomb. Now, stand the cookie cutter up so that both sides are able to dry evenly and let dry for 24 hours. If you have packed the cookie cutter well, it should be able to stand up with no problem and no material falling out. If material does fall out, you can quickly place the cookie cutter over the top of it and drag it along the flat surface to fill back from the bottom up (as detailed in step 10), or you can simply put all of this material into a jar and use it as bath fizz/salts and try again with a new star.

12. After 24 hours, carefully remove your bath bomb from the cookie cutter by very gently pushing it out with your fingers. Push out a little bit at a time and alternating back and forth with which star points you are pressing on. Now enjoy your bath bomb!
