A Body Scrub That Will Give You The Skin Of Your Dreams

Truth: I have never been one to exfoliate. I mean, I barely have time for a shower and washing my hair seems like a miracle some days, so exfoliation was so low on my radar. Well then I made my husband a recipe for ingrown hairs and saw how easy it was to throw together a concoction. I later decided to give it a try myself and whipped up the following recipe. Since then I have been using it 3-4 times a week and I tell you my skin has never been smoother. In fact I would even call it glowing. Glowing could be interpreted two ways actually and both are accurate: glowing because of its healthy, soft suppleness; and also glowing because my white limbs are in desperate need of some sunshine. So if you want to get your glow on too, read on. Happy Making!

Ingredients and Supplies Needed

Fine Sea Salt

Epsom Salt

Table Salt

Almond Oil

Fractionated Coconut Oil

Vegetable Glycerine

Vitamin E Oil

Glass Container (A wide mouth 16 oz canning jar is what I used)

Optional: Essential Oils (I used Spearmint and Eucalyptus for this recipe)

Body Scrub Recipe

Alright, now that we have the ingredients covered, the rest is pretty easy. Again, I am not one to use exact measurements, I know this makes it hard to follow a recipe but makes it much less likely for those mixing cups and spoons to introduce bacteria to your products.  You can read more about that here.

So what you will want is an even mixture of epsom salt, sea salt, and table salt. Break up your container visually into four even parts, not including the "neck" of the bottle or container. Make 1/4 sea salt, 1/4 epsom salt and 1/4 table salt. Then use a very clean spoon to mix all salts together. You should now have at least a fourth of your jar still empty.

Fill the remaining 1/4 of your jar with equal parts of coconut oil and almond oil and leave just enough space for approximately 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerine, 15 drops of Vitamin E oil,  and 20 drops of essential oils. Then use your clean spoon again to mix all ingredients together. This should form a very thick, salty paste that is covered by a layer of oil. Store in your shower in the dryest spot available and use as often as you like!

Ingredient Properties and Benefits

Salt- The biggest benefit of the salt is to act as a mechanical exfoliater which means it will physically remove the dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin simply by lightly scrubbing. Salt can also help balance out oily skin and also helps to clear bacteria from pores in your skin which leads to less skin breakouts and ingrown hairs.

Almond Oil- Almond Oil is very high in antioxidants which lends to many of the oils benefits for skin. This oil has been shown to help fight and reduce UV damage to skin due to its high antioxidant content, especially Vitamin E. It is also known to help remove dirt and germs from skin due to its lightweight and hypoallergenic nature, allowing it to penetrate deep into skin and pores where it can soften and dislodge these unwanted items.  It's Vitamin A component also means that it can help your skin fight acne breakouts.

Coconut Oil- Coconut oil is great for skin in the fact that it so very high in saturated fats which means it softens skin but also forms a layer over the skin preventing moisture from escaping and thereby retaining moisture. Coconut oil is able to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin thereby moisturizing all layers of the skin.

Vegetable Glycerine- Like coconut oil, vegetable glycerine helps to form a moisturizing layer over skin which acts as a barrier and helps prevent moisture from escaping from the skin as well. The fact that it is vegetable glycerine means it is made with all plant products and not yucky things like petroleum and added preservatives which you would find in standard glycerine.

Vitamin E Oil- Vitamin E oil is known for its skin healing properties. In this recipe it is mainly used as a preservative but it also has benefits of preventing and correcting sun damage, moisturizing, and promoting healing of scar tissue and stretch marks.  If you are looking for further help diminishing scars and stretch marks, look into this recipe.

Essential Oils- Essential Oils in the recipe will have the main benefit of adding uplifting and/or relaxing scents, like Lavender or Eucalyptus. Oils like Peppermint may also help to invigorate skin, while oils like Tea Tree may help combat ingrown hairs and skin breakouts.  Some scent combinations can be found here as well.

As always, if you find yourself making this recipe, let me know what you think!
