Layered Candy Cane Bliss: A Christmas Melt And Pour Soap Tutorial

Layered Candy Cane Bliss: A Christmas Melt And Pour Soap Tutorial

This past Christmas my girls and I started a new tradition thanks to some friends of ours. It all started one morning when the girls woke up and we found that elves had left some goodies on our doorstep! The card included informed us of the fun tradition of “Elfing”… acting as Santa’s elves and spreading good cheer to friends and neighbors. What makes Elfing extra special is that you do it anonymously, it’s all about the act of giving without taking any credit whatsoever which teaches young children such a good lesson!

The girls were immediately on board with doing this so we got a list of recipients together and collected things for our baskets that we would be dropping off the following week. I wanted to include something homemade in our baskets so that is when I had the girls help me whip up this bath of candy cane melt and pour soap that you see here.

When it was time for the deliveries, we waited until dark and loaded up the car. We would pull up to a house, the girls would unbuckle and run to the door, set the basket on the doorstep, ring the doorbell and then run back into the car… giggling all the way of course! We only got caught on the Ring camera one time which the girls though was hysterical 😂! Still to this day there are people that do not know it was the girls that left them the goodies!

Okay, and now, back to the soap. This is a relatively simple recipe and is great for holiday gift giving. Like I mentioned before, this is something that even kids can help to make and even have fun doing so (especially with the crushing candy cane part!). Here are the details…

This candy cane melt and pour soap tutorial is perfect for DIY Christmas gift giving!

Step By Step Candy Cane Bliss Soap Tutorial

  1. Cut all soap into cubes and separate into 3 separate microwaveable containers (2 clear and one goat’s milk).

  2. Melt one of the clear containers in the microwave for 30-60 seconds at a time, until all is melted.

  3. Once melted, add the desired amount of mica/colorant and stir to combine thoroughly.

  4. Add 5mL of your fragrance oil/essential oil and stir well to combine.

  5. Slowly pour the contents into a clean soap mold.

  6. Spray with 99% alcohol to remove any bubbles.

  7. Let cool for 30 minutes.

  8. After the first layer has cooled, begin your next layer by melting you container of goat’s milk soap just as you did the first time, microwaving in 30-60 second intervals until all is melted.

  9. Once all is melted, stir, and then using a thermometer, measure the temperature until it falls within the range of 125-130 degrees. Be careful that the tip of your thermometer is only touching the soap, and not the sides of the container.

  10. Once your goat’s milk soap base has cooled to the specified temperature range, spray your first layer that has cooled in the mold with the 99% alcohol spray, this allows the layers to adhere properly.

  11. Next, carefully pour your goat’s milk soap on top of the first layer.

  12. Spray with 99% alcohol to remove any bubbles.

  13. Allow the goat’s milk layer to cool for 30 minutes.

  14. While letting this layer cool, crush up a single candy cane into small pieces.

  15. After the goat’s milk layer has completely cooled, melt your final clear soap base container in 30-60 second intervals until all is melted.

  16. Once melted, stir in your mica/colorant.

  17. Now stir in 5 mL of your fragrance oil/essential oil.

  18. Wait for the melted soap to reach the 125-130 degrees temperature range. Once this has happened, spray the goat’s milk layer with 99% alcohol and then slowly pour the final layer of melted soap.

  19. At this point, your soap loaf mold should be mostly full. Spray any bubbles with 99% alcohol to remove.

  20. Place bits of candy cane on top of the soap, the smaller the pieces the better as the heavier ones will sink. If you wait too long to add these bits they likely will not stick well. Keep in mind that some pieces will inevitably come off as you slice the soap and package it.

  21. Allow soap to harden and cool overnight.

  22. Once fully hardened, slice soap into desired thickness. I was able to make approximately 10 bars from the loaf mold.

  23. Wrap in kraft paper, tie with a bow, and you now have 10 gifts!
