Next up in my series of reviews for healthy, clean, non toxic beauty products is this highly talked about facemark from Herbivore Botanicals. This non toxic skin care product claims to gently resurface and clarify the skin on your face using an AHA/BHA combination. Unlike other enzyme exfoliating products, these ingredients have been naturally derived with the AHA being derived from fruit acids and the BHA being derived from Willow Bark. Given the fact that the ingredients are naturally derived does the Blue Tansy mask work?? Read my results below!
Ingredients: aloe barbadensis (organic aloe) leaf juice, hydroxyethyl ethylcellulose (plant derived), glycerin, glyceryl caprylate, salix nigra (willow) bark extract, tanacetum annuum (blue tansy) flower oil, ananas sativus (organic pineapple) fruit extract, carica papaya (organic papaya) fruit extract, carica papaya (organic papaya) leaf extract, jasminum sambac (jasmine) flower oil, leucidal (radish root ferment)
Texture: A very light gel texture, very smooth and glides on the skin quite easily... and can we just talk about the scent for a moment?? Such a wonderful scent! Herbivore uses a Blue Tansy oil which in my opinion is a very relaxing scent - combine to that a bit of jasmine (a floral fragrance) and you have a real winner!
How to use: To use you simply place a layer of the product on your face (with clean hands and fingers) or use a clean makeup brush. The mask will begin to dry within a few minutes and feel tight on your face. You can leave the mask on up to 20 minutes, it’s good to use shorter amounts of time for more delicate/sensitive skin or if you have never used enzyme masks before. You will likely notice a slight tingling sensation as the enzymes in the mask begin to work. After the time is up, wash off the mask completely. It does adhere to the face quite well so you may need a washcloth to remove it completely.
Results: Here is a little Herbivore Blue Tansy Mask before and after below.
It may be hard for you to tell completely because my before photo is just awful and right after applying the mask so my skin is shiny... but I assure you my skin was dull and I had uneven skin tone. In the after photo you can clearly see that my skin is much brighter and smoother and the tone and color of my face is more even.
I do have to mention a few things about my results. First off, I do not have much in the way of break outs or acne so I can’t speak to if this masks helps calm this as one may think with its potent anti inflammatory properties. Also, while I did find the results to be pretty great I am not convinced as to their longevity. I noticed within 24 hours or so my typical complexion back. I should note that the instructions do say that when you first use this mask use it every other day for the first five days, then use it 2-3 times per week to maintain the results. I did not use it every other day in the beginning so perhaps this is why my results didn’t seem to stick... consistency is always key my friends!
Cost: The cost is $48 for a 2.3 oz jar
Overall Grade: I give this mask a B grade overall with an A for immediate results. I did see pretty great results I just can’t give an A overall since my results weren’t too long lasting (although this is possible user error as mentioned above). I did thoroughly enjoy the experience of the mask, so soothing, as well as the fact that it was not harsh on my skin whatsoever as some more conventional enzyme masks have been. I think, based on my results, it would be an awesome mask to have for special occasions as well as a mask that could be used consistently for preparing for some sort of big event or photo session.
