A More Natural Hair Care Routine Inspired By Sally Beauty

When it comes to hair care (and most beauty and personal care products for that matter), I believe there is a true need for products that create a balance between clean and natural ingredients + effectiveness. I have been burned numerous times by products that were all natural, yet not effective and that is always so disappointing. And believe it or not, I have overwhelmingly found this to be true with hair products. I have found some products that I have discussed here on this blog and my Instagram that do work…. but man oh man have I tried many that either didn’t clean my hair effectively, or left me with a dry, flaking scalp. All this to say that I fully support and promote clean living and non toxic beauty products, but I am also okay with “less toxic” products that take many of the major controversial chemicals out, as long as it is effective, because after all, with my long thick hair I can not afford to be messing around with hair products that don’t work!

So you have heard of the beauty powerhouse Sally Beauty right!?? Well, did you know that they have a selection of hair care products that aim to use more natural ingredients and eliminate unnecessary chemicals? I was approached by Sally Beauty to highlight some of their natural inspired products and I selected 6 items from their list to try out and review. I am compensated for this post but the words here are my own and my review is my honest opinion. Let me tell you a little bit about each one of the products below and how I use them in my hair care routine, and then I will highlight for your some of the specific ingredients that impart clean, natural benefits to the hair!

Biotera Natural Origin Nurture Moisturizing Shampoo

I have been using this as my daily shampoo and I can certainly see an increase in the moisture in my hair. The shampoo has an awesome foaming action and really cleans my hair thoroughly as well. The shampoo itself is free of sulfated surfactants, silicones, parabens, dyes, and gluten. It is formulated with coconut oil and honey + majority naturally derived ingredients (81% to be exact). The smell was pleasant, nothing unique if I’m being honest, but a subtle apple scent which I enjoyed.

Biotera Natural Origin Nurture Moisturizing Conditioner

Like the shampoo I mentioned, I have also been using this conditioner for the past week and it really works wonders on helping to leave my long, thick hair detangled (which is no easy task). Like the shampoo it is also free of sulfated surfactants, silicones, parabens, dyes, and gluten. And like the shampoo, it is also formulated with coconut oil and honey but also manages to increase the amount of naturally derived ingredients in its formulation (at 97%)! The scent is similar to the shampoo and the texture is thick and creamy, just how I like for conditioners!

Biotera Natural Origin Nurture Moisturizing Masque

I was most excited to try this product because after this past summer in the hot sun, my hair really needs a good dose of moisture (and honestly a hair trim too LOL)! This is from the same line of products as the shampoo and conditioner that I discussed above so it is also free from sulfated surfactants, silicones, parabens, dyes, and gluten. I have used this once already and plan to use it twice a week from now on, because it really made a tremendous difference in my hair. After using this product (placed on my hair, left for 15-20 minutes, rinsed, let me hair air dry) my hair was much softer, less frizzies/flyaways, and it was super shiny! It did not leave my hair greasy or heavy feeling and I was very pleased with the results. Like the shampoo and conditioner, this masque includes coconut and honey in it’s formulation and has 96% naturally derived ingredients.

The following three oils are truly a must for anyone that is prone to dry hair, flyaways, split ends or lackluster hair. I will talk a little about each oil individually but just to let you know how they are incorporated into my routine, I keep them on my counter and use one variety every few days based on what I find that my hair needs at the time. I place a few drops in the palm of my hand (a few drops goes a long way, even for my long hair- if you have short hair you may just want to start with one drop) and then run my palms through the ends of my hair. With any excess I carefully try to place it along my scalp/part line. I then comb my hair out so the oil gets distributed throughout my hair. I typically do this at night time before bed, but I occasionally will do this before going out on a date or event. These specific products are new to me but I have been using similar oils in my hair for quite some time. I love these specific products because of the unique blends/varieties as well as the fact that the bottle and dropper is super convenient and makes placing this products a breeze. These oils are 100% pure with no additional ingredient or preservatives added.

Silk Elements Pure Oils Shea Oil With Lavender Oil

This particular oil I will use to control frizziness, which my hair is accustomed to with humidity (and when I am particularly busy running around due to sweat). The unique combination of the shea and lavender oil leads to a pleasant smell but is also very calming and soothing to the skin. I like to use this oil after a crazy day, it allows me a few minutes of true self care while also providing a relaxing scent and environment. I can still smell it on my hair all evening long after placing it!

Silk Elements Pure Oils Argan Oil

Argan oil is a great choice for hair that needs a huge does of moisture and shine. Argan oil has long been synonymous with gorgeous hair and you can find this ingredient in many mainstream hair products. I use this one for moisturizing my hair but also for taming flyaways (when needed I rub a very small amount, less than one drop, along the area of flyaways). This is also a great oil for a deep conditioning hair treatment. When I have done this in the past I use enough drops to saturate my hair fully and then I keep it in overnight and wash my hair thoroughly in the morning. An argan oil deep treatment would leave your hair extremely moisturized, soft, and shiny!

Silk Elements Pure Vitamin E Oil With Safflower and Flaxseed Oil

Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant and is also highly nourishing to the hair. The addition of safflower and flaxseed to this mix increases the moisturizing properties. I use this when I have a dry, flaky scalp (with my long hair this is common unfortunately). I can always feel immediate relief to my scalp after placing this and my scalp (and hair) always look much healthier after using. I will commonly use this oil as a deep conditioning treatment as I mentioned for the argan oil. Because of the skin nourishing properties of Vitamin E, this is also a great oil to have on hand for any skin irritations.

Highlighting The Natural Ingredients

Coconut Oil (Contained in the Biotera Products)

Coconut oil has natural antibacterial properties and thus helps with dandruff and helps prevent hair loss. Because it is also high in fats (good ones) and antioxidants, it also adds moisture, softness, and luster to the hair.

Honey (Contained in the Biotera Products)

Honey naturally strengthens hair follicles and increases hair growth. It is also a natural humectant meaning it attracts moisture to the hair which can help in cases of dandruff and eczema.

Lavender ( Contained in the Silk Elements Shea and Lavender Oil)

Lavender is an essential oil derived from the lavender plant that helps soothe and calm the mind and body - perfect for skin irritations.

Shea Butter Oil (Contained in the Silk Elements Shea and Lavender Oil)

Due to its rich and thick consistency, shea butter oil puts a shield around damaged hair, allowing it to retain moisture. Also because of this and its natural anti-inflammatory properties, it is very helpful in treating dry scalp and dandruff.
